The Brooklyn, New York diocese released a list of over 100 priests credibly accused of the abuse of minors on Friday. Most priests involved in cases of alleged sexual abuse were ordained between the years of 1930 and 1979. Since the Catholic church enacted reforms back in 2002, only two cases were reported. One case resulted in a more than 27-million-dollar settlement for four adult survivors who claim that they suffered from abuse by a Catholic school teacher during the years of 2003 and 2009. The diocese states that about two-thirds of the credibly accused priests are deceased.
After the Wednesday release of the list of credibly accused abusive priests in New Jersey, the Brooklyn diocese followed suit with their own list of 108 priests. The shocking content of these lists compounds the severity of the abuse that has occurred for decades and been dismissed by the Catholic church. Clergy abuse survivors cannot move forward in their lives if the trauma they have suffered remains unacknowledged by the church and those who helped to keep the abuse hidden from the public.
